Students fought for the right to vote at 18 because during the beginning of our organization. Young people were getting sent off to fight wars they had no voice in. Young people were rising to fight for social justice, climate justice, women's rights, and were against the Vietnam war. The young people of that generation introduced the 26th amendment to the United States Constitution. “The right of citizens of the United States, who are 18 years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.” ASA continues to hold these values and will protect the rights of young people to be able to vote in the United States! WE ARE DEMOCRACY PROTECTORS!
What Does that Mean?
ASA works to expand voting access to every young person who is eligible to vote!
How?
- ASA has worked on creating early polling locations on college campuses.
- ASA works on putting Day of Polling Locations on college campuses.
- ASA distributes accurate information to students to be eligible to vote and help students walk students through the process.
- ASA speaks out against unjust laws limiting the voting ability to young people and will take institutions and policies to court if fringing on young people’s right to vote.
- Elections have become more competitive in Arizona and ASA is recruiting young people to volunteer as poll workers. ASA also has voter protection teams at polling locations making sure voting lines are properly running and are there to help voters identify and correcting systemic issues with voting machines and the improper use of provisional ballots.
- ASA will also have a Voter Hotline team of attorneys advising voters having trouble with voting.
